Harper Racing Bracket Familia

This blog was started to share my experiences drag racing in Bangkok, Thailand . . . . my new found home. The account is of my 'resurrected' drag car . . . . rebuild after the brakes failed at 120 mph and it went off the end of the race track and into a canal (klong). No one was seriously hurt as the safety measures all worked.

In its current form, my drag racing 1990 Mazda Familia weighs 875 kilos and now has a new inline Toyota straight six-cylinder, dual overhead cam, four valve "3JZ" (1JZ cylinder head+ 2JZ block = 3JZ !) with 264 cams, Wiseco forged 87mm pistons, a single Holset 40 turbo, 800cc SARD injectors, all controlled by a MicroTech ECU (tuned by MacTec). It uses a modified Toyota A342 automatic transmission and high stall (4200 rpm) torque converter from MV Automatics in Australia. The entire brake system is new. The rear end is a Nissan truck unit with 4.33 gears and a spool. I use Goodyear racing tires on Centerline wheels. With the old 1JZ engine it had a best of 10.70 e.t. at 215 kph on 1.5 bar of boost. My goal with the new engine combination is a 9.90 e.t. at around 225 kph. This is a bracket (11.90 or 10.90) or "Pro Truck" index race car. The object is to be able to consistently and reliably run exactly on the e.t. index in the bracket. It is not designed to see how fast or quick I can make it go.

So far, after only two week-ends of "test & tune" it has gone 11.11 at 207 kph at only 0.9 bar, stabbing the gas at the green (not up on the torque converter at all), and shifting at only 5500 rpm. The reason for these 'slowing' procedures is so I can 'dial in' the car to the 12.9, 12.9, and 11.9 brackets common to most week-ends at the Bangkok Drag Avenue where I race.

There is talk of, and I have high hopes for, the creation of a 10.90 bracket where this truck should shine. After I am sure all systems are 'A-OK' . . and I am dialed into all the brackets I want to enter, I will see how quick and fast it can go.
